Add Text Boxes or Call Outs

Use text boxes to add visible text to a PDF page. Text boxes are always visible and do not open or close.

Use Call Outs to point to a specific area in the document. A Call Out is a text box with an arrow.

Note: Instructions for text boxes also apply to callouts unless stated otherwise.

Add a text box or callout

  1. Go to the Review tab
  2. In the Markup group, click Text Box or Call Out
  3. Click the page to place the text box
  4. Type your text

Edit text in a text box

  1. Select the Hand tool, Select tool, or any Comment tool
  2. Double-click inside the text box
  3. Edit the text

Tip: Use the Format tab to change font, alignment, or spacing

Change text box properties

  1. Select the Hand tool, Select tool, or any Comment tool
  2. Right-click the text box
  3. Click Properties
  4. Edit settings on the General, Appearance, or Font tabs
  5. Click Close

Move or resize a text box

  1. Move a text box:
    • Click and drag the text box to a new location
    • For callouts, drag the red handles to move the arrow
  2. Resize a text box:
    • Drag the red handles on the edges

Tips

  • If the cursor blinks inside the text box, you are in edit mode
  • Click outside the text box to exit edit mode
  • Right-click the text box and select Properties

Set default properties

  1. Right-click a text box with the required appearance
  2. Click Make Current Properties Default

Note: Default properties for text boxes do not apply to Call Outs.

Delete a text box

  1. Select the text box
  2. Do one of the following:
    • Press Delete
    • Right-click and select Delete
