Digital IDs

Nitro PDF Pro for Windows

A digital ID functions much like a paper-based ID (such as a passport or driver’s license). It verifies your identity and provides special access or signing rights within Nitro Pro.

In Nitro Pro, digital IDs are used to:

  • Make PDF files tamper-proof with secure digital signatures
  • Control who can open, edit, or sign your documents
  • Manage access and usage rights on a user-by-user basis

How do digital IDs work?

Each digital ID contains two parts: a public key and a private key.
  • Public key: Includes a certificate and identifying information. This is what you share with others so they can verify your signature or encrypt files.
  • Private key: This is never shared. It’s securely stored and used only to decrypt files or apply your verified signature.

When someone has your public key, they can encrypt documents that only you (with your private key) can open. This helps ensure document integrity and authenticity.

What Digital ID Types Does Nitro Pro Support?

PKCS#12 Digital ID File

  • This portable option allows you to use the same digital ID across multiple computers.
  • For example, if you install the same certificate on both your desktop and laptop, you can open secured PDFs on either device.
  • Security remains intact because you must enter your password when importing the ID into My Digital IDs.
Windows Certificate Store
  • This type of certificate is tied to your Windows user profile and cannot be copied or transferred to another computer. It’s ideal for users who only need their ID on a single device.
