Nitro Launches Smart Redact: AI-Powered Redaction Built for Regulated Industries

Nitro today announced the general availability of Smart Redact, an AI-powered document redaction tool built for organizations that handle sensitive data at scale. Smart Redact marks a significant expansion of Nitro's AI capabilities beyond PDF editing and eSignatures.

Smart Redact uses advanced natural language processing (NLP) to instantly identify over 30 categories of personally identifiable information (PII), including unstructured data that pattern-based tools commonly miss. Compliance professionals can review AI-suggested redactions, adjust them as needed, and publish documents with permanent, untraceable redactions—all within Nitro Workspace, without switching to a separate tool.

For regulated industries like legal, government, healthcare, and insurance, the volume of sensitive documents requiring redaction continues to grow. Regulations including GDPR, HIPAA, and FOIA require organizations to protect PII across a wide range of document types. Smart Redact is designed to reduce the time and risk involved in meeting those requirements.


What Smart Redact delivers

Smart Redact combines automated detection with manual control, giving teams both speed and precision. Its AI detection engine identifies PII across native text, scanned documents, and image files, including handwritten content, through built-in OCR support. Users can search and redact specific terms across a document, or use freeform drawing tools to manually remove images, signatures, and visual elements that automated detection might not capture.

Every AI-suggested redaction is validated against strict confidence thresholds, grouped by category, and available to review in real time before any file is published. Once complete, Smart Redact generates a secure PDF with all visible and hidden data—including metadata and embedded scripts—permanently removed. Files are processed in a temporary, storage-free session, and customer data is never used to train generative AI.

Smart Redact also integrates with Nitro Analytics, giving administrators a dedicated dashboard to track redaction usage across their organization. The tool supports files up to 100MB or 500 pages and is currently available in English and Spanish.

Security and compliance at the core

Smart Redact is built to meet the security standards required in highly regulated environments. The product is certified to ISO 27001, SOC 2, HIPAA, and the EU–U.S. Data Privacy Framework. It is managed through the Nitro Admin Portal, where administrators can control access and monitor usage alongside their other Nitro products.
