HelloSign vs. DocuSign: Choosing the Right eSignature Solution Based on Your Business Needs

Today, as more and more business moves online, it’s crucial for businesses to prepare for a world of increasingly digital work. For many organizations, that means choosing an electronic signature (eSignature) tool that enables the team to sign and send professional-looking digital documents.

With so many eSignature solutions available, choosing the right one for your business can help you avoid wasting valuable time and budget.

To help, we evaluated two popular eSignature options: HelloSign and DocuSign.

Here are the criteria we focused on in our comparison:

  • Pricing and flexibility
  • Scalability
  • Features and functionality
  • Security
  • Customer support and success
  • Integrations
  • User satisfaction and reviews

Introducing DocuSign

When DocuSign was founded in 2003, it was one of the first eSignature solutions, leading the charge to bring an outdated process into the digital world. Since then, the company has worked with more than a million customers and served hundreds of millions of users.

Today, the tool includes over 350 native integrations, a powerful API and an expanded set of features that make it easy for users to get started and build DocuSign into their existing stack.

DocuSign has evolved and grown—but so has their competition. There are several capable eSignature solutions on the market now, so it’s worth the time and effort to decide which will work best for your company.

Introducing HelloSign

HelloSign launched in 2011. Despite the later start, the company already has more than 80,000 customers.

Now owned by Dropbox, HelloSign is on a mission to digitize all the tasks a modern business needs to manage that are traditionally done on paper.

HelloSign is a worthwhile competitor to DocuSign. The tool has already garnered tons of positive feedback and is rated above DocuSign in customer satisfaction according to G2 reviews.

Pricing

Winner: HelloSign

Alternative: Nitro Sign provides unlimited eSignature, robust enterprise grade features, and enterprise support - Take a look at our pricing page.

There are a few key differences to note when it comes to pricing.

For one, HelloSign offers a limited free plan—which includes three signature requests per month—whereas DocuSign doesn’t. That alone makes HelloSign a great choice for individuals and solopreneurs who need an eSignature solution but don’t send a ton of documents regularly.

Plus, DocuSign’s plans are based on a usage model—all DocuSign plans limit the number of envelopes users can send per month or year. If you find yourself needing additional envelopes, that’s an additional cost on top of your monthly plan.

Here’s what DocuSign’s pricing structure looks like:

Price flexibility

Winner: HelloSign

Alternative: Nitro Sign does not use envelope or transaction models to limit usage and deployment across your organization, we simply provide unlimited eSignatures across all our plans.

DocuSign’s lowest-priced plan includes five signature requests per month, while the Standard and Business Pro plans include up to 100 envelopes per year for each user on the account.

Envelopes are essentially a package of documents sent to the signer and can include as many documents and signature requests as needed. This is great if you need to send large packets at once and request several signatures in each. But if you’re steadily sending a regular flow of documents, the DocuSign model isn’t great. And if you go over the envelope limit on your plan, you’ll have to spend more on top of your monthly plan cost to buy more usage.

HelloSign, on the other hand, includes unlimited signature requests on all three of their paid plans.

Both companies offer custom packages for larger customers that allow for more users and additional features.

Scalability

Winner: HelloSign

Alternative: Nitro Sign empowers businesses to transform the way they work, by eliminating expensive processes, streamline workflows and accelerate organization-wide productivity. See what Nitro customers are saying.

While both companies split features and usage across their plans, HelloSign’s unlimited Signature Requests across all paid plans, combined with features like reminders and notifications on lower tiers, make HelloSign the more scalable option.

Both companies also limit lower tiers to up to four or five users, so teams larger than that may need to move to the enterprise solutions. If you need features like single sign-on, in-person signatures, or full branding control, specific integrations like Salesforce or upgraded support, for example, you may need to upgrade to an enterprise plan—even if your usage or team size don’t require it.
